Lots of adventure activities in Auvergne!
This is a hiker's paradise; there are several walks of different lengths, ranging from easy to difficult.
The Auvergne is perfect for exploring by mountain bike or (electric) bicycle. For enthusiasts, there are many routes at different levels.
Or for a dose of sensation and adventure, you can explore the beautiful Auvergne by motorbike.
Culture
Lovely villages include the authentic Olliergues with its castle and old crafts and Ambert with its lively market on Thursdays with many crafts and local products.
House of the Fourme d'Ambert and Mairie Ronde. Thiers, the town of cutlery. Billom, the village of pink garlic. Arlanc with its lace museum. La Chaise-Dieu with its famous abbey and a classical music festival in August. Vichy, a charming town, good shopping with lots of history and famous for its thermal baths. Clermont-Ferrand, with its Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica, with picturesque streets, antique shops and art galleries. You can visit many castles in Auvergne on the Historic Route des Châteaux d'Auvergne.
Gastronomy
Definitely important when on holiday. Tradition and quality are important in Auvergne cuisine. Meals are simple and genuine with quality products presented in a rustic style. Cheese, sausages and ham remain a powerful symbol of Auvergne.
Some specialities include les Saucisson sec, Soupe à l'ail rose, Tarte au Cantal, Coq au Vin, Truffade, Saumon d'Allier, Lentilles vertes du Puy, Aligot, Tarte aux Myrtilles.
Auvergne has its own wines, for a very long time (early 19th century). The Côte d'Auvergne from the Puy de Dôme. And the Saint Pourçain of the Allier. The oldest vineyards in France. This is a complete range with an aroma and taste of nature.
There are 5 cheeses from Auvergne that are AOC. These are: Saint Nectaire, Cantal, Salers, Fourme Ambert and Bleu d'Auvergne. There is also a wine and cheese trail.
During our dinner, we like to cook with all the good products from the region.
Winter time
Close to our house at half an hour's drive is the family ski resort "Chalmazel". A ski area of 12 km of slopes open from December to April. There are also opportunities for snowkiting here!
Also fun is cross-country skiing on the Col du Supeyres , but you can also go snowshoeing here, a whole new way to experience nature.
The two biggest ski resorts are Super Besse Sancy Massif (85 km of slopes) and Super Lioran Massif du Cantal (60 km of slopes). These two areas are about 1 ½ hours' drive away and are well worth a visit.
